In 1999, the first Motocross of African Nations Championship was held in Zimbabwe, bringing together national teams from across the continent to compete for African motocross honours.
The championship was established under the banner of the African Motorcycle Union, known as the AMU. The CONU was founded on 20 October 1998 and later became known as FIM Africa, the Continental Union responsible for motorcycling on the African continent. Although the championship now carries the FIM Africa identity, many riders, officials and supporters still affectionately refer to it as “the AMU”.
Over the years, the championship has travelled across Africa, giving different National Federations the opportunity to host an event of continental standing. This tradition has allowed riders to experience different countries, circuits and cultures, while giving host Federations the opportunity to showcase their organisational capabilities and grow motorcycling within their own borders.
The Motocross of African Nations is more than an annual continental championship. It is a celebration of national pride, teamwork and the continued development of motocross throughout Africa. For many African riders, it also represents an important step towards competing at World Championship level.
In 2026, 27 years after the inaugural championship and 17 years since Namibia last welcomed the event, the MXoAN returns to Gallina Motocross Park.
When Namibia hosted the championship in 2009, 110 riders representing seven nations competed for continental honours. This year, Namibia will once again welcome Africa’s leading motocross riders for an event befitting the championship’s proud history.
Approximately 180 riders from across Africa are expected to compete at Gallina Motocross Park from 28 to 30 August, making it one of the largest entries in the championship’s history.
FIM Africa extends its best wishes to the Namibia Motor Sport Federation, the organising team, officials, volunteers, sponsors and everyone working behind the scenes to deliver the 2026 MXoAN championship. Namibia has a proud reputation for staging excellent events, and expectations for this year’s MXoAN are understandably high.
