STEVEN ODENDAAL DEBUTS IN WORLDSSP IN PHILLIP ISLAND

After two seasons in the Moto2 World Championship, the former European Moto2 Champion joined forces with the legendary team Ten Kate Racing, Yamaha, for the 2020 World Supersport campaign.

Following a successful test in Spain and Portugal, which saw Odendaal place amongst the fastest from the beginning, the 27-year old South African had a clear objective to kick off the season with a podium at Phillip Island, Australia, during the opening round of the 2020 Championship.

Steven Odendaal: “We were pretty fast in testing and I was really confident going into the race weekend. Unfortunately, it did not start the best for us on Friday. I crashed on oil going into the first corner which ended the day for us. Luckily, I did not suffer any serious injury but the team had to work really late to repair the bike. After such a difficult opening day, my objective was to qualify on one of the first two rows. We qualified 7th and we knew we could fight for the podium in the race. Our struggle continued on Sunday, however, and I had another crash in the warm-up. I tried to stay calm in the race and make sure we finish the first race taking home some valuable points, which we did with a 7th position at the end. I would like to say big thanks to my team for all their hard work this weekend. After the tests, I did expect to come home with a podium here, however, I do realise that this was only my debut race, we are leaving with valuable information ready to come back stronger in Qatar in two-weeks’ time. I am really happy for the opportunity to work with such a great and professional team this year, I believe that we make a really strong package together and we will aim to prove that in Qatar!”

External travel restrictions force postponement of Round 2 of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.

Italian participation in WorldSBK – both on track and off – is vital, thus the decision has been taken to postpone the Lauretana Water Qatar Round until further notice.

Further updates will be published in due course.

Following positive and constructive discussions between all parties, a number of proposals were put forward to address the points raised. They included:

Course: In future all courses at  FIM championship events will be designed with the collaboration of a former motorcycle rider.

Road Book: A ‘course inspector’ team to be appointed – to develop the Road Book for all rounds so that all riders / teams have the same level of information and a truer interpretation of the actual level of difficulty of the course.
Speed reduction: More variation of the styles of course in order to have lower average speeds.

Air intake restrictor – the installation of the air intake restrictors, as per FIM 300 WSBK – in order to reduce engine power and also reduce speed. A test period will apply until June.

Rider protection equipment: Adopt airbags as soon as possible. Imminent meeting planned with relevant manufacturers, with 2020 being used for development in order to implement fully in 2021.

Navigation: A new instrumentation tower is being developed, with more visual and audio signals, and more compact / less obtrusive to avoid injuries.

Pleased with the progress made during the meeting FIM President Jorge Viegas said: “I am satisfied with this very constructive meeting in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents in Rally, which is a priority for the FIM especially in the Dakar rally. We will test solutions from the start of this season and we will make a plan at the end of the season to adjust as necessary. The participation of ASO, KTM, Husqvarna, Hero, Honda, Yamaha and also the riders Sam Sunderland and Adrien Van Beveren allowed us to work hand in hand to take up this challenge to ensure the sustainability of this spectacular and unique championship.”
