GET TO KNOW YOUR MECHANIC | ALFIE COX

As the countdown to the 2026 Goiás FIM Intercontinental Games continues, we meet 63-year-old Alfie Cox, one of the experienced mechanics supporting the FIM Africa MX2 team in Brazil.

Alfie has been a motorcycle mechanic since 1980 and has raced and represented South Africa for more than 40 years. He also owns a KTM authorised dealership and has spent more than two decades working as a mechanic for his sons, Brad and Trey. His experience includes international motocross, enduro, off-road racing and the Dakar Rally.

For Alfie, being selected for the FIM Africa team is especially meaningful as his son Trey will also compete in the MX2 team.

“I am proud that Trey has been selected and that with my experience I can help technically with the MX riders from the African continent!”

In Brazil, Alfie will serve as a technical adviser and hands-on mechanic, helping ensure the riders and their motorcycles are prepared for the competition.

For Alfie, one of the most important parts of being a race mechanic is staying calm when problems arise, keeping the rider focused and dealing with technical issues systematically and professionally.

With the riders receiving their motorcycles when they arrive at the track, Alfie will focus on checking the moving parts and ensuring everything is in good working order. He will also work on the suspension settings for Trey and Cameron so they can feel as comfortable as possible on their bikes.

The language barrier and adapting to motorcycles that have not been set up to the riders’ exact preferences will be among the challenges in Brazil. Alfie notes that the format means all competitors will have to adapt to the conditions and work with what they have.

One of his favourite parts of being a mechanic is simple:

“To see your rider do well and to have the bike mechanically sound and finish and the ultimate goal is to win races.”

Alfie is looking forward to seeing Trey and Cameron take on an unknown track against unfamiliar riders and experiencing what the Games will bring.

Working as part of an African team also has special meaning for Alfie, who has raced extensively across Africa and around the world.

“To have the opportunity to be part of an African team is very special.”

His preferred racing disciplines are motocross, enduro and rally, his favourite bikes to work on are KTM, and he describes himself as “Experienced.”
