DARRYN CONFIRMED AT QJMOTOR GRESINI MOTO2 FOR 2025

QJMOTOR GRESINI Moto2 has confirmed Darryn Binder to ride with the squad in 2025. Young, with a valuable CV in Moto3 and, along with Jack Miller, one of only two riders who made the direct jump from the quarter-litre class to MotoGP, Darryn is looking forward to the opportunity. The intermediate class has not been kind to him so far, but the experience gathered by the South African appears to be perfect for a comeback season.

DARRYN BINDER #15
“I’m really thankful for the opportunity to be racing with Gresini Racing next year, I’m really looking forward to it. I feel like I’m starting to make progress and hope to carry the momentum to towards the end of the season. Then the goal is to keep improving throughout 2025 and hopefully to battle for great results. I can’t wait for the new season to start!”

LUCA GRESINI – TEAM MANAGER QJMOTOR GRESINI MOTO2
“We chose to bet on Darryn Binder, who since he has already raced in MotoGP, has developed the right awareness that will allow him to do well also in Moto2. He has endured two challenging seasons, also due to injury. We’re confident he’ll feel at home with us, as we’re aiming at bringing him to the positions that are more in line with his talent.”

BRAD RECOVERS FROM MISTAKE WHILE BATTLING FOR TOP FOUR TO FINISH 19TH IN THE EMILIA ROMAGNA GP

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli echoed to the sound of MotoGP for the second time in two weeks as the series put round fourteen of 2024 in the record books for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Unfortunately Brad Binder tumbled out of top four contention to place 19th.

There was no sign of the rain that briefly created mixed conditions at the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks ago. Misano shone in late summer sun for its second stage of 2024 MotoGP and for the Emilia Romagna fixture that represented the penultimate European date on the current calendar.

The riders and teams were already well versed with the 4.2km trajectory and 16 turns of the mostly flat Italian layout and Red Bull KTM came through the Sprint on Saturday with Brad Binder earning a top six result. The South African made another strong start from 4th on the grid but before the pace could settle Brad lost traction in Turn 4 and slipped away. He managed to remount and complete the race in 19th.

Brad is now 5th in the standings. The Mandalika Street Circuit and Motegi mean long trips for MotoGP in successive weeks now for Grands Prix in Indonesia and then Japan. After a one-week pause another triple will ensue with trips to Australia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Brad Binder
19th:

“I felt pretty good in warm-up and we made a little step from yesterday. I knew if I wanted to do anything here then I had to go with the boys early on. That’s what I tried to do and hang with their speed but unfortunately I washed the front at Turn 4. Sorry to my team for the mistake because we could have had a decent result. My goal is to fight in the top three and that’s what I wanted to do. We’ll try again next week.”

DARRYN LEFT DISAPPOINTED WITH P16 FINISH IN THE #EMILIAROMAGNAGP

After four races in the top 10, South African rider Darryn Binder suffered his first zero-point finish since the Sachsenring Grand Prix, despite making a good start. From the twentieth spot on the grid, the 26-year-old shot straight up five positions into the points. In the course of the race, the rider with the number 15 even reached P13, but as the laps progressed, Darryn had less and less to counter with due to diminishing grip on the rear, which ultimately led to the loss of three positions and thus also to the loss of further championship points.

Darryn Binder
P16 – (+23.441)
Moto2 World Championship 2024 – P17 – 38 Points

“I’m really disappointed with how today’s race went. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy starting from P20 on the grid, but at the same time, I knew I had the rhythm and pace to get into the top ten. I had a good start, found my rhythm and by the middle of the race I felt comfortable. But then I struggled with the rear grip and went slightly backwards from then on. We need to analyze with the team, why we lost so much grip towards the end of the race, because two weeks ago I felt very good even in the final stages of the race, but this week it was completely different. So, I’m disappointed with the result, but we fly to Indonesia tomorrow and I’m really looking forward. I like the places we race there.”

TOP SIX FINISH FOR BRAD IN THE EMILIA ROMAGNA SPRINT RACE

Red Bull KTM secured more MotoGP world championship points thanks to Brad Binder’s 6th position in the Saturday Sprint at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the second consecutive event at the sunny Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

The penultimate European Grand Prix of 2024 took MotoGP back to San Marino as the Emilia Romagna round replaced the date initially penciled for Kazakhstan. Despite a damp start on Friday morning, Misano quickly dried and provided fast and high-grip conditions once more for Saturday’s agenda. Red Bull KTM and their rivals already had plenty of data and references for the 16-corner layout and both Brad and teammate Jack got immediately to work once the asphalt reached an optimum state.

The South African and the Australian went into Q1 but Brad rasped to 1st place and went straight into Q2. One second split the top 11 riders in Q2 and Brad’s best lap came in the final minute of Q2 and initially had him on the front row in 3rd. He was lowered to 4th by 0.072 of a second in the final moments of the 15-minute outing.

Attempting to make the most of his decent grid slot Brad made an excellent jump when the lights disappeared at the start of the Sprint but then weathered a difficult opening two laps to get his tire into working range and also pop up his start device! Once into a rhythm he was just outside the top five and a fairly static race ended with #33 collecting four points.

Brad Binder
4th in qualification, 6th in the Sprint

“My speed was decent and to do a 30.6 in Q2 was my quickest lap around here. I messed up the Sprint because it took too long for the front tire to come up to performance and I almost crashed and went wide in Turn 11. I needed two laps to get my feeling and then I could ride OK. It still wasn’t fast enough but at least I could push and I’m happy enough with the result because I thought I had ruined the race by the time we go to Turn 6 for the first time. Tomorrow I definitely need to work on that tire situation, and we should be pretty good.”

DARRYN LOOKING FOR TOP TEN FINISH IN THE EMILIA-ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Darryn Binder had to pull into Q1 qualifying at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix after a small slip on Saturday morning. In the short session, in which the times were incredibly close together, he improved significantly but got caught up in some traffic towards the end, which robbed him of the chance to attack again from sixth position.

But even though the South African did not make it into Q2, he has been satisfied with his development since the first Misano weekend. Of course, the 26-year-old expects more from himself but appreciates the confidence he has regained in his machine. The aim is to be back in the top 10 in the race when the lights go out for the fourteenth round of the season on Sunday at 11:15 am (CEST) for 22 thrilling race laps.

Darryn Binder
P6 (Q1) – 1’35.701 (+0.350)

“I improved a lot in Q1, because I was able to improve my lap time significantly compared to the second practice session this morning. But unfortunately, on my last lap I got caught up in a bit of traffic on the track, so I wasn’t able to gain the extra tenths that would have allowed me to get into Q2. I’m a bit disappointed, but overall, I feel much more comfortable with the bike. Compared to last time here, we’ve moved up a few positions on the grid, but I’m still not really happy with it. The race is tomorrow, and I will do what I can to finish in the top ten again.”
